  2. In regards to the Bad Karma post: Deaths seem to be a perpetual excuse for missed assignments and absences. However, I will not dismiss them completely, since I hope that these students are not lying about close relatives dying, that would be very disturbing to do in order to justify irresponsibility. Fortunately, I've never been in these circumstances nor do I wish to be, so perhaps I don't understand these students' situations

    1. I agree with you completely. It would take a very cynical individual to lie about something like that.

  3. As an educator, I can understand how students giving excuses such as "family emergencies" and "death" can put you in a tight position. If the circumstance occurs, of course it is understandable to why the student missed classes, however it is very unfortunate if a person lies about something tragic to be excused from an assignment or a class. But as a teacher or an educator, it is hard to question such an excuse because of its sensitive nature. Personally, from a student perspective, I would be nervous that if I did lie about something so serious for an excuse, that I would get bad karma and that something really tragic may happen.

Also, I am new to Brooklyn College and online classes. I do not know if we are supposed to answer the questions above about "scadenza" and "nf" but scadenza means deadline and nf means its a feminine noun.

  5. The first bad kharma reminded me where I want to take this class during winter 2016 but I decided not to take it. Because I was traveling at the time and I know I can't do things on time. Anyhow, I am not going anywhere this summer, and hope do well in this class.

  6. when it comes to deadlines and completing assignments, I always think its best to complete them as soon as possible because things always come up. Of course life is life and things come up unexpectedly but if given a reasonable amount of time to complete an assignment then, excuses should not be necessary. Although, in case of an emergency, I don't understand how people expect to get extension without proof because anyone can just say anything. But that's just my opinion!

  7. Life happens, and situations arise when we least expect it and when it is least convenient for us. However, keeping everyone informed and being honest is always necessary in those moments. That means that there should be proof if you have a medical emergency (students are always required to provide evidence -- even in high school) and if there is a death in the family. It is only fair to yourself and to the professor. If it does actually happen, it should be easy to get evidence regardless. The fact that it's online makes the work easily accessible and decreases the likelihood that you truly wouldn't be able to get the work done.

I do not know if we are supposed to answer the questions at the beginning of this blog in the comments, but just in case: "scandenza" means deadline or due date and "nf" means that scandenza is a feminine noun.

  10. I feel death is very sensitive. People handle it in very different ways. Forgetting to submit a death certificate might just be a result of the trauma. I remember when a very close uncle of mine died. I had an assignment due that day and I actually went to submit the assignment. I wasn't going to stay for the class because of the emotional state I was in. I gave in the assignment and told the professor what happened and he said, "so." I couldn't help but cry and walked out. Words can't explain how that made me feel. In terms of dead excuses, people have to be given the benefit of the doubt. If they lie about something so severe then karma will play her part. You just don't want to be that kind of insensitive person.

  11. Reading through these excuses was somewhat unsettling. Some students don't take classes seriously so they ruin it for everyone else that has a legitimate issue. It's usually the most ridiculous stories that turn out to be lies; I am referring to the one where the woman said she had complications in her pregnancy and couldn't get out of bed, but you saw her later on that day and she looked embarrassed. At the end of the day these particular people are only hurting themselves, since they lose out on getting their money's worth for the class.

  12. It seems that death is a recurring excuse for a majority of these students. I definitely agree with what someone mentioned earlier, death is a sensitive topic. This is college and this is real life, we are all adults. It's pretty unsettling to see that so many people pull the death card. Some could actually be telling the truth but if they're not then shame on them. Regardless, a professor should not have to ask or remind you to provide the proof. If this a true excuse then you should have no issue providing this asap. If someone can't make a deadline for whatever reason then they should consult with the professor before making up false excuses. It ruins it for other students who actually tell the truth.

"scandenza" means deadline/ due date and "nf" means that it's a feminine noun.

  13. I fail to see why you would release these messages/experiences into the public domain. Reading through those messages has not improved my Italian skills. But I did waist my time reading them. Can we stick to learning Italian? Thanks.

  14. This is an example of rudeness and arrogance. This student has no right to instruct me as to what I should or should not do with the class. Notice the self-centeredness and sense of entitlement: "......not improved MY Italian skills." Because the world revolves around his needs and wants, of course.

  16. I don't necessarily see the value in releasing students' excuses to the class. While I'm sure many of them are made up, I feel sympathetic for those who did have honest excuses or who were in such a place in their life that would require them to resort to such drastic measures. Making up excuses like this indicates a much more serious issue with an individual and their place in the world so for that, I feel sorry for them. Shaming them, in my opinion, is only perpetuating the negativity of the situation.

It did, however, let me know that you don't take any BS so I will be more mindful to be extra vigilant throughout the course. So, point taken. This may be effective and avoid some of the frustrations you might endure at a professor, but I can't help but feel compassionate for these students.

For the purpose of this course, scadenza means dealine. The abbreviation "nf" indicates that it is a noun and assigned the female gender.
