Discussione n. 2: PIZZA ALLA RUSSA. Scadenza 6 giugno

COMMENTO in inglese:

how hard was it to understand? how many Italian words did you catch? how would you like to try that pizza?

======================================

LEZIONE DI LINGUA: when I assign videos or news items or whatever, take a few minutes to read EVERYTHING on that page. You will recognize some words and by association you will figure out some more.

Preposition ALLA, special use of this preposition, it means IN THE STYLE OF...

so, ALL'AMERICANA means.......  ALLA NAPOLETANA....... ALLA SICILIANA ......

ALL'ITALIANA.

Two famous films from the past were:
MATRIMONIO ALL'ITALIANA followed, of course, by
DIVORZIO ALL'ITALIANA

  1. The video was a bit too fast to be able to understand everything. The images helped to put into context what was happening. I believe also that it was difficult because I don't have a wide knowledge of Italian words yet. I was able to catch a couple of words based on the similarities of two languages that I speak. As we start expanding our italian vocabulary I'm sure we'll be able to catch more words in this and other upcoming videos.
As for trying the pizza...I am a vegetarien so it's not really possible. It's an interesting take on pizza though.

  2. Although the video was a bit fast, I was able to catch on to multiple words. Because I am Hispanic, and the language resembles each other it was not too difficult for me to understand a lot of the words, I was able to catch about 30 or so Italian words. I am not a pizza eater so I would have to say that the pizza being made was not very appealing to me haha.

  3. As my classmates have mentioned, the video was a bit fast to understand full sentences. However, with the visuals of the video, I was able to use context clues to figure out what was going on or being said. I am a fan of ITALIAN pizza. Napolitano, margarita,Sicilian. From this video, Russian pizza is not something I would be into.

As for "alla" and "all", as mentioned, it means "in the style of" or "to the" I believe "Alla" is used when the following noun is a feminine noun that begins with a consonant. All' is used when the following noun is a noun that begins with a vowel.

  4. The speaker was a little fast but I did get a good sense of how the Italian language sounds. Pronunciation is very important and I got to hear a variety of different words in a short period of time. I don't have much experience with the Italian language so I liked the exposure to how it sounds in dynamic sentences. The fact that the images correlated with the words gave me some clues as to what some words meant. Some other words were also familiar because of their similarity to their Spanish counterparts. I studied Spanish in high school so I have a little experience with Romance languages that I hope will come in handy in this course.

Some of the words I recognized were verde, minuti, alta. I, of course, recognized most of the foods -- mozerella, buffula, ketchup, maionese, salame, formaggio. I also recognized rectangulare and alta at the end.

I will never turn down pizza.

  5. Overall it's not that difficult to catch on because there is context, so you know what's going on. I didn't understand that many words, I had to watch it a few times because the speaker was speaking fast. I understood pizza, ketchup, mayoinese, ingredient, rectangulare, salame, buon appetite.
I am Russian but I don't particularly enjoy Russian food, I actually prefer Italian, but I would try it.

  6. While it was a bit fast, I did watch the video a couple of times to write down some words or phrases I did not initially catch. Since I know some Spanish the words are pretty similar and I was able to pick it up right away. The context also helped out with understanding what he was saying. I think I caught at least 15 words which does not seem so bad for someone just starting out with Italian. Pizza is one of my favorite foods so I definitely would not mind trying it this way.

The preposition ALLA' means in the style of. So in this case it was in the style of Russia.

  7. It was very difficult for me to understand anything but a few ingredients which was similar to English words since this is my first exposure to the language. Due to the context of the video, you can have a holistic understanding of what was going on. I would try the pizza, why not, anything once. As stated in this blog 'ALLA' means in the style of. I would guess it transforms, to 'ALL' becuase the use of the A makes the noun feminine removing it would make it masculine.

  8. The function of ALL’ in this case refers to “in the style of”. Here we see a phrase that refers to the style of marriage and divorce in Italian culture. In the previous homework we watched a video entitled “Pizza ALLA Russa” here ALL’ function in a similar way referring to the style of something.

  9. The speaker in the video spoke very fast, so I missed most of the words. I would say I understood about 20 words based off the similarities to english and spanish. The function ALL' means "in the style of." At first I thought ALL' mean "to the" as in referring to a woman or a famine noun

  10. I found the video more difficult to understand than I originally assumed it would be. Seeing the words corresponding with the objects was extremely helpful. I am a big fan of Italian Pizza and I live in an Italian household so many of the words involving food were familiar.

In regards to "alla". I think it helps associate one word with another. As professor said, "in style of". The ending of the word is based on whether its male or female pronouns, plural or singular.
